Exploring the klongs

Mahasawat is only about 50 kms from Bangkok in Nakhon Pathom Province, near to Mahidol University’s Salaya Campus. The Province of Nakhon Pathom is criss-crossed by many canals (klongs) and irrigation ditches. Mahasawat is built along one of these canals which is the life source of the community, and for many, the only way of commuting.

Mae Klong Railway Market

The Maeklong Railway Market has been around since 1905. It is found in the province of Samut Songkhram, located on the Gulf of Thailand. Fishing was (and still is) one of the main livelihoods of the people who lived here, and the market was another way in which to sell their goods. Officials decided to build a railway in order to better deliver these goods to provinces around Thailand, including the capital. The market remained, however, despite the new tracks that cut through it. You will hear the train long before you actually see it. Vendors and merchants collectively begin to coolly move their belongings and umbrellas away from the tracks as the train barrels forward, laying on its horn every now and then to warn people of its inevitable passing; this is why the market is also known as the ‘umbrella pulldown’ market. Watch as the food you are about to devour is literally run over by the train as it passes. The train is so close you can reach out and touch it as it zooms by, though we do not recommend doing this.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

The most famous of the floating markets of Bangkok is Damnoen Saduak, about 100 kilometers southwest of Bangkok. This buzzing market is at its best in the early morning before the crowds arrive and the heat of the day builds up.

The JEATH War Museum

JEATH stands for Japan, England, America, Australia, Thailand and Holland, representing the nationalities of the prisoners of war (POW's) who were forced to work on the construction of the famous "Bridge On The River Kwai". The museum is on the bank of the River, inside Wat Chai Chumphon temple, and displays graphic images of the terrible conditions inflicted on the many young men that died and the many that survived to tell the story.

Erawan Waterfalls

Founded in 1975 as Thailands 12th National Park, it is covering an area of km². Located on West Thailand in the Tenasserim Hills of Kanchanaburi Province, it is one of the most famous national parks in Thailand. The major attraction of the park is Erawan Falls with emerald green ponds, named after the three-headed white elephant of Hindu mythology.

Ayutthaya

Founded 1350, Ayutthaya became the second Siamese capital after Sukhothai. It was destroyed by the Burmese in the eighteenth century. Its remains, characterized by the prang or reliquary towers and the gigantic monasteries, give an idea of its past splendor.

Lopburi

Lopburi was one of the centers of the Dvaravati culture. She then came under Khmer domination at the time of the kingdom of Lavo, and was the second capital of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya in Narai the Great (Ramathibodi III reign 1657-1688). He built a large palatial assembly, the King Narai's Palace, which is now a museum.

Wat Rong Khun

Located 13 km south of Chiang Rai, Thailand, Wat Rong Khun is commonly called the white temple. It was built by Chalermchai Kositpipat, renowned Thai artist who wanted to create a lasting tribute to Rama IX, the present King of Thailand, and also honor his hometown.

Mae Sai

Mae Sai, or locally more often, Maesai, is the northernmost city of Thailand. It is mainly a stepping stone for visits to Myanmar and has few attractions of its own.

Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle is in Chiang Rai Province, in the far north of Thailand. The English name comes from the meeting of Laos, Myanmar and Thailand here, but to the locals it's Sop Ruak, since this is where the Mekong meets the Ruak River. Historically the Golden Triangle has been an area well-known for the growing of opium, and the name comes from a US State Department memo on the practice.

Boat on the Mekong

Travel on the Mekong, the most famous river, which take its source in China, sticks to the border between Thailand and Laos, cross Cambodia and finish in Vietnam. Your trip will be aboard a typical boat of 4 people.

The Opium Museum

The Golden Triangle used to be infamous as one of the largest producers of opium. Various Thai organizations led by the Royal Project and Doi Tung Development Project, have spent decades battling this trade. As part of this campaign, the Hall of Opium was built to educate people about the dangers of the drug through an entertaining exhibition which traces opium’s history from its first use 5,000 years ago to current issues of drug abuse and addiction.

Doi Mae salong

Mae Salong's early history centred on the the opium trade of the Golden Triangle. Its recent history was shaped by the 93rd Division of the Chinese Nationalist Army that refused to surrender to Chinese communists after the Nationalist Kuomintang government was routed in 1949. The local culture now changes to the oolong tea, which is now Mae Salong's main product.

Padong tribes

From Burma and forming a minority tribe Karrenis the Padongs fled to Northern Thailand, where they have the status of political refugee. They are about a thousand and are distributed in some villages. Padongs are special for the custom of their wives to surround the neck, since childhood, with a long necklace spiral, which gives the impression of extending that body part. From there come the names of "long-necks" or "giraffe women".

Doi Suthep

The Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai province, Thailand. It is often referred to as Doi Suthep although this is actually the name of the mountain on which it is located. Located 13 kilometers north of the city of Chiang Mai, it is a sacred site for the Thais. From the temple, you will have an impressive view of the city of Chiang Mai.
